Product Swap Time: Fourth and Ten

MrsStanfordsClass

So excited to be part of the Magical Product Swap hosted by Jessica from Mrs. Stanford's Class! This time, I got the privilege of reviewing an adorable sight word game from Lisa over at Fourth and Ten.

I love her blog and I LOVE the fact that she lives in Ohio (where I am from) I always feel more at "home" when I find Ohio connections. Lisa teaches 4th now but she has taught third in the past. Her blog is full of amazing ideas and some of my favorite activities have come from her store!!

I was able to review her Snow Day Sunshine Fry word pack! So.Stinkin'.Cute.

When most people think about sight words, they think about younger students. However, like all of you, I have lots of friends who are either below level or on-level but not fluent readers. This game is so cute and it allows older students to practice sight word phrases which is so important in becoming more fluent readers. It is not enough to just word call, they need to be able to chunk text! Lisa's game, includes 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade fry word phrases along with some exciting game cards to make it a lot of fun to play!

I printed out the 3rd grade phrases (100 of them!) and the extra game cards. Then I cut them all out. So quick and easy - it could be printed one morning and be ready to be used with an intervention group later that same morning (not that I ever leave things to the last minute like that, HA)

*Side note- need a new blade in my paper cutter*

I gathered my "students" to help me play. Students draw a card and read the phrase. If it is read correctly, they keep the card in their pile.

Sometimes, a player draws a "sunshine" card. Oh, NO! Look at that sad face. She had to put her cards back.

Other times, a player draws a "snow day" card. Yeah... we are so happy we win extra cards!

I know my students are going to love this game and I am going to love hearing their fluency improve. I know activities like this help them become better readers which also helps them become more confident and better all around students.

What are you waiting for? Head on over to Fourth and Ten and read all about my Multiplication Bump game Lisa is reviewing. After you check that post out, head on over to TpT and get this game for your class - they'll love it and Lisa put it on sale just for you!! Click here to see it in her store.

Sight Words for 3rd grade??

I am excited to be linking up with Katie from Teacher to the Core.
As a third grade teacher, I haven't really done much with sight words. However, it seems every year I have some students who are coming to be well below grade level and they are missing many sight words. So as I was surfing pinterest (follow me here if you'd like!) I found the most amazing idea from Teach 123... Sight word homework! Think about it. It can be completely differentiated for each students and their needs, plus it requires little class time. I don't know about you, but I feel like I can't fit one.more.thing into our schedule! Kids would be given a list of sight words. We would practice them really quickly at the beginning of our guided reading group and they would be expected to practice the words at home each night. Then, on Friday, I would time each student reading their words and they would graph their time into our data folders (perfect data for RTI). Click the first picture below to read Teach 123's blog post and click the second picture to see the product in her TpT store.

Please follow the link to Teach 123 and pin her idea from the actual source!

The other idea I have been in love with since the beginning of summer came from Sarah over at First Grader at Last. Sight word sticker books! Now, I know what you are thinking... sticker books for third graders? Well, probably not although they do LOVE stickers. I am using this idea for my own kindergarten-aged daughter! She has to know 40 sight words by the end of the school year and I thought this would be a fun way to motivate and keep track of her progress! Click on the picture below to see it in her TpT store.

This is why I love stalking reading teacher blogs and obsessing over viewing Pinterest... the ideas are amazing...

Sorry for the double post but I was too excited to wait for tomorrow. Plus, tomorrow I will be linking up to the kindergarten Daily 5 book study! Just like my free pre primer sight word version, there are lots of different response sheets to help you differentiate with this one activity! The first 3 people to comment, will get it for free!! Don't forget to include your email address so that I know where to send it. Have a great night,

I have included both color and black and white versions. I also included several options for recording sheets - I am a girl who can never make any decisions and likes to have many options. I thought maybe some of you out there might feel that same way! If you download this little activity, please leave me some comments. I would love to hear what you think. I need to know what y'all liked (yes, I am another Texas teacher) and what y'all might like better for next time.
